According to reports, Onyeka Onwenu slumped and died shortly after performing at a birthday party in Lagos. The shocking turn of events happened according to sources at the Reddington Hospital in Lagos where the “Ekwe” singer died after collapsing at a private function.

Still according to sources close to the family, Onyeka Onwenu was attending a friend’s birthday party when she took to the stage to perform. Then suddenly, immediately after her performance, Onyeka reportedly on returning to her seat suddenly slumped.

Emergency services were very promptly called according to sources, and Onyeka was quickly rushed to the Reddington hospital in Victoria Island, where she was shortly after brought in, pronounced dead. The cause of Onyeka Onwenu’s death is yet to be confirmed.

Speaking, on the condition of anonymity, a source in reporting said:

It is very sad. Onyeka Onwenu just performed at the birthday of Mrs. Stella Okoli of Emzor Pharmaceuticals this night and after performing, she slumped. She was taken to Reddington Hospital but couldn’t make it.

This is an unbelievable story and one that is sure to throw the entire nation into mourning. Onyeka Onwenu was a powerhouse in every sense of the word. An actress, a singer, an author, responsible for giving us such classics as “Ekwe”, “One Love”, “You and I”, and starring in movies such as LionheartObara’m, Half of a Yellow Sun and more.

I still cannot believe it. The suddenness of this is really too much to bear. I extend my condolences to Onyeka’s loved ones, her family and friends, and I wish them some comfort and respite at this very unbelievable and tragic hour. Oh no!
